I followed the tutorial in the Natural Scene Designer User Manual (p.68), but had to use the elevation tool in the map window to specify the range of elevation to put the trees on. I only put them in my Grand Canyon scene on my blog and had to mouse around the north rim of my Grand Canyon map to get a rough range in order to only place them on the top of the rim. Not sure if that is actually an accurate representation, but it matches my memory of the place when I visited there in the 1980s.
